What is Farm to School?

Farm to School is a program for school, district, or early childhood education communities that brings healthy, local food into school cafeterias, supports food, agriculture, and nutrition education in the classrooms, and builds strong community partnerships with local farmers and other interested groups.

Some schools have garden or culinary programs, while others choose to focus on taste tests or composting leftover cafeteria waste. Each school sets their own vision for its program and selects goals to focus on during a given school year.

What is a Farm to School Coach?

Implementing a Farm to School program at a campus or district can be a lot of work! Using a coaching model helps each school stay on track and succeed as they embark on the Farm to School journey.

That's where coaches come in! Coaches can be anyone from the community with love and ambition for Farm to School work.

The Farm to School Collaborative coaches will:

  • • Be paired with a school that is mutually a great fit
  • • Receive training in coaching and facilitation practices
  • • Dedicate time and energy to meeting with and coaching their partner school throughout the 2025-2026 school year
  • - All coaches attend the three-day kickoff retreat May 23rd-25th, 2025
  • - Commit to meeting with their school teams monthly during the 2025-2026 school year to roll out the school's action plan and vision

The role of a Farm to School Collaborative Coach is to schedule and facilitate team meetings, guide their team to create a strong values statement & action plan, and connect the team to resources & support that will help them successfully implement their plan during the school year.

Why Become a Farm to School Coach?

Farm to School isn't just about better food—it's about building a healthier, more vibrant school culture. By turning cafeterias and classrooms into centers for food-related discovery, schools give students the tools to connect what's on their plate to where it comes from, how it's made, and why it matters.

The result is stronger academic outcomes, deeper engagement, and a community that thrives together—inside and outside the classroom.

As a Coach, You'll Receive:

  • • Leadership training and hands-on preparation
  • • Work experience with determined people toward meaningful goals
  • • A $2,500 stipend for your contribution
  • • Great new relationships and personal growth
  • • Satisfaction of contributing to a positive shift in the community
